This page goes deeper on one part of the policy. The full record is at China Eastern Airlines Baggage Rules.

The China Eastern checked baggage allowance on Americas routes tops out at 158 cm total. The weight cap is 23 kg or 32 kg. It depends on cabin.

Basic Economy still gets one free bag at that weight. That is easy to miss next to the airline’s other US fares.

China Eastern sets its checked baggage allowance by cabin and route. It prices extra pieces in RMB, even for flights departing the United States. That single detail trips up more travelers than the weight limit does.

The rest of this page works through the fare table, the items China Eastern will not put in the hold, and where the free allowance runs out. Our China Eastern baggage rules overview covers carry-on and personal item limits if you need those too.

Checked Baggage Allowance by Fare, Americas Routes

China Eastern groups its US, Canada, and nearby Americas departures under one baggage table. Every fare in Economy and Premium Economy shares the same weight cap per piece. The difference between fares is how many free pieces you get, not how heavy each one can be.

Fare or cabinFree piecesWeight per pieceLinear size per piece
Basic Economy123 kg (51 lb)158 cm (62 in)
Standard, Flexible, and Y or B Economy223 kg (51 lb)158 cm (62 in)
Premium Economy223 kg (51 lb)158 cm (62 in)
Business and Premium Business232 kg (70 lb)158 cm (62 in)
First232 kg (70 lb)158 cm (62 in)

The 158 cm figure adds length, width, and height together. It is not any single side of the bag. Check it against your case before you fly.

A 29 or 30 inch hardside can creep close to that combined number. Count the depth and the handle length too. Our checked baggage weight limit guide explains how airlines measure this in general.

32 kg is the hard ceiling. China Eastern will not check a heavier bag for a normal fee. Past that line, the airline treats the piece as air cargo instead of passenger baggage.

What China Eastern Will Not Put in the Hold

Beyond the standard list every airline follows for the hold, China Eastern is explicit about one thing. Power banks and spare lithium batteries are strictly prohibited from checked baggage. There is no weight or capacity exception that lets one through.

Devices with a built in battery, like a laptop or camera, are allowed in checked baggage. The battery has to fall within the standard 100 watt hour lithium ion limit. Our batteries in checked luggage guide covers the general rule these limits follow.

A smart bag with a removable battery over roughly 2.7 watt hours needs the battery taken out first. Otherwise the whole bag has to travel in the cabin instead of the hold. There is no exception for a bag left packed at the counter.

Firearms and sporting equipment such as bikes, golf clubs, and skis are accepted as checked items on Americas routes. Each counts as one piece within the free allowance already listed above. A single piece of special or sporting baggage to or from the US is capped at 45 kg, well above the regular per bag limit.

Connecting and Codeshare Baggage

China Eastern does not spell out whose limits govern the China Eastern checked baggage allowance on a multi carrier trip. Its own fare and baggage pages do not cover every partner combination. The safest move on a mixed ticket is to ask upfront.

Ask the airline that issued the ticket which carrier’s weight and piece limits apply. Do this before you check the first bag. That answer can shift depending on which segment is marketed by which carrier.

Our guide to checked bags on connecting flights walks through how that question usually gets answered in practice.

Overweight and Oversize Fees

China Eastern prices extra, overweight, and oversize baggage in RMB, even out of the US. It publishes no parallel dollar table for American departures. An Economy bag between 23 kg and 32 kg on an Americas route costs a flat 1,000 RMB.

That is a flat fee, not a per kilogram rate. A bag at 24 kg and a bag at 31 kg cost the same to check. There is no partial charge for being only a little over.

Oversize pricing works the same way. A bag between 159 cm and 203 cm total runs 1,000 RMB. Anything over 203 cm jumps to 2,700 RMB.

A bag beyond the free allowance altogether, rather than simply overweight, costs differently. The first extra piece runs 1,300 RMB. Each piece after that runs 2,000 RMB, all on Americas routes and all quoted only in RMB.

Every one of these numbers is set in a foreign currency. China Eastern does not publish how it converts at the counter. Run the route through our baggage cost tool before departure so a fee is not a surprise.

For routes outside the Americas network, weight based and piece based systems can differ. The international checked baggage allowance guide explains how those two systems generally work.

Choosing a Checked Bag That Fits the Limit

Since the China Eastern checked baggage allowance caps every Economy piece at 23 kg, the case itself matters. A heavy empty suitcase eats into that allowance before you pack a single shirt. A light shell buys real packing room instead.

The Travelpro Maxlite 5 25 inch expandable spinner is built around exactly that problem. Its low empty weight leaves more of a 23 kg limit for actual belongings. The larger Travelpro Maxlite 5 29 inch is one of the lightest cases in its size class, useful on a Business or First ticket where the cap rises to 32 kg.

The Samsonite Omni PC 24 inch and its larger sibling the Samsonite Omni PC 28 inch both sit comfortably inside the 158 cm linear limit. The 28 inch model is large enough that the 23 kg weight cap, not the size box, becomes the real constraint. The Delsey Paris Helium Aero 24 inch checked spinner is a mid size option with a lock built into the shell for a single traveler on a longer trip.

The Amazon Basics 30 inch hardside checked luggage deserves a specific warning on this carrier. At 30 inches, once wheels and handle length are added, a case in that class can run close to the 158 cm combined limit. It will also use up more of a 23 kg weight allowance before packing even starts.

A digital luggage scale pays for itself the first time it keeps a bag under 23 kg at check in. That beats paying the flat 1,000 RMB overweight fee at the counter.

China Eastern publishes the allowance and the Americas route charges on its own free baggage allowance page, which is the source for the figures above.

The Bottom Line

The China Eastern checked baggage allowance gives every Economy fare, including Basic Economy, one free bag at 23 kg and 158 cm on Americas routes. Business and First get two bags each at 32 kg. The traps are the currency and the flat overweight charge, since a 24 kg bag costs the same as a 31 kg bag.

Pack a light case. Weigh it before you leave home. Check the route’s baggage cost before you land at the counter with a surprise.
