Eurowings is owned by Lufthansa, but its baggage rules are not Lufthansa’s. The two airlines share a parent company, yet a bag free on Lufthansa can still cost extra on Eurowings. The Eurowings baggage policy splits into three tiers, BASIC, SMART, and BIZclass, and BASIC gives less than most expect.
What is actually free on Eurowings
Every fare, BASIC included, comes with one small bag that fits under the seat ahead of you. Eurowings caps that bag at 40 by 30 by 25 centimeters, about 15.7 by 11.8 by 9.8 inches. On BASIC it is the whole allowance.
The larger wheeled cabin bag is a separate item on this airline. It tops out at 55 by 40 by 23 centimeters and 8 kilograms, about 17.6 pounds. On BASIC that bag is an add-on, starting around 21 EUR.
BASIC, SMART, and BIZclass compared
BASIC is the fare that shows up first in search results. It buys the flight plus the small underseat bag. Checked baggage, seat selection, and the standard cabin bag all cost extra.
SMART adds one large cabin bag and one checked bag up to 23 kilograms. It also includes free seat selection and free airport check-in. BIZclass, the premium short haul fare, doubles that to two bags at 32 kilograms, plus two cabin items.
Eurowings did not invent this structure. Ryanair and easyJet price their fares the same way. Wizz Air runs a nearly identical model across Europe: a small bag included, and everything bigger is extra.
What checked bags cost on Eurowings when SMART is not included
Book BASIC and still want a checked bag, and you pay for it by weight. A bag up to 12 kilograms starts around 17 EUR, one up to 23 kilograms around 18 EUR. The heaviest, up to 32 kilograms, runs closer to 67 EUR.
A second checked bag adds roughly 70 to 75 EUR on top of the first. Each kilogram over your paid weight tier costs about 15 EUR more. Eurowings caps the total at five checked bags per person, each up to 32 kilograms.
Why the Lufthansa Group name causes confusion
Lufthansa sells Eurowings connections on its own site. The two carriers often share terminals in Germany. That closeness leads plenty of travelers to assume one set of rules covers both airlines.
Lufthansa’s own Economy Basic fare includes only a personal item, 40 by 30 by 15 centimeters, with no separate cabin bag unless you hold elite status. Eurowings BASIC includes a roomier personal item, 40 by 30 by 25 centimeters. Neither carrier gives a free full size cabin bag on its cheapest fare.
Read the Eurowings baggage policy on its own page, not the Lufthansa page. Do not assume anything carries over between the two.
What travelers actually run into at the gate
The Eurowings baggage policy on paper is one thing, and enforcement at the gate is another. Traveler reviews describe cabin bag checks as inconsistent rather than absent: some passengers board with three bags unchallenged. Others get stopped and charged on the spot, once for about 50 EUR over a small extra sling bag.
Other travelers said a Berlin gate agent claimed their bags were not in the system, though the app showed them paid and included, and asked for payment again. The problem is not that Eurowings never checks bags. It is which gate agent you get.

What Eurowings does not publish
Eurowings states its checked baggage weight limits clearly, but its own site does not publish linear size limits for a checked suitcase. If your bag is large rather than heavy, call Eurowings before you fly, or ask at check-in.

Price SMART before you commit to BASIC and start adding bags one at a time. The totals often land close together. SMART also locks in your seat and your cabin bag instead of leaving both to chance.

The Eurowings baggage policy gives every fare one small underseat bag for free, and nearly everything larger costs money, including the standard cabin bag on BASIC tickets. Lufthansa Group ownership does not change any of it. Check the European carry-on size rules and your own fare page, not the airline next to it.
