What the bags cost

FeeAmount
Overweight bagEUR 13 per kg at the airport for a bag between the 10-20kg or 20-32kg tiers

Basic: free personal item only, no checked bag, no trolley. WIZZ Go: personal item plus 1x20kg checked bag. WIZZ Plus: personal item, trolley bag, plus 1x32kg checked bag. Up to 6 checked pieces allowed per passenger. WIZZ Priority (trolley bag plus boarding) costs EUR 10-60 online or EUR 65-75 at the airport.

Wizz Air publishes a checked bag size limit of 149 x 119 x 171 cm. That works out to about 58.7 x 46.9 x 67.3 inches, far past the 62 inch linear total most US airlines use. Read the Wizz Air baggage policy closely, though, and size is not where this carrier trips people up.

Weight is. Wizz Air sells checked bags in four fixed tiers: 10 kg, 20 kg, 26 kg, and 32 kg. The free cabin bag is small, even by European standards.

Here is what its own pages actually say, checked against the airline on September 4, 2026.

The free bag is a personal item, nothing more

Every fare, including the cheapest Basic fare, includes one free bag at 40 x 30 x 20 cm. In inches that is 15.7 x 11.8 x 7.9, and it must fit under the seat in front of you.

It also has to weigh no more than 10 kg. Wheels can add up to 5 cm to those measurements, per Wizz Air’s own note.

There is no overhead bag included with Basic. Run your bag through our size checker before you assume it clears the limit.

An overhead bag means buying WIZZ Priority

The 55 x 40 x 23 cm trolley bag, 21.7 x 15.7 x 9.1 inches, only comes with WIZZ Priority. Wizz Air does not sell that overhead bag on its own.

Priority bundles it with boarding order instead. Wizz Air’s own baggage allowance page lists it at EUR 10 to EUR 60 online.

At the airport that same bundle runs EUR 65 to EUR 75. That gap is reason enough to add it before the gate.

Ryanair runs a similar split between a free small bag and a paid overhead one. Wizz Air just sells it as a bundle rather than alone.

Checked bags: four weight tiers, one oversized limit

Basic fares carry no checked bag at all. WIZZ Go includes one 20 kg bag.

WIZZ Plus includes both the trolley bag and a 32 kg checked bag, per Wizz Air’s fare bundle page. A passenger can check up to six pieces total on one booking.

The stated per bag maximum, 149 x 119 x 171 cm, is generous next to the flat 62 inch total that easyJet uses. None of that changes the weight math.

A duffel that clears the size limit with room to spare still gets weighed like everything else. The Wizz Air baggage policy puts weight ahead of size at every step, which is the opposite order from what most US flyers expect.

Overweight bags cost by the kilogram

Wizz Air charges EUR 13 per kilogram at the airport for a bag that falls between tiers. That means between 10 kg and 20 kg, or between 20 kg and 32 kg.

There is no flat overweight fee published on the carrier’s own site. The per kilogram structure rewards booking the right tier in advance.

Guess low online and the airport makes up the difference. It does so one kilogram at a time.

Bundles decide what you get

Basic gives you the free personal item and nothing else. WIZZ Go adds a 20 kg checked bag.

WIZZ Plus adds the trolley bag plus a 32 kg checked bag. That is per Wizz Air’s own bundle comparison page.

The Wizz Air baggage policy changes with the bundle you booked, not just the cabin you sit in. Check your fare name before you pack, not after you land at the gate.

What actually happens at the gate

Travelers describe gate charges that do not always match the bag itself. One traveler review recounts a 45 pound charge for a backpack built to fit under the seat. The traveler says it fit fine once she boarded.

Another travel forums post describes a 30 pound fee after staff called a bag too wide for the small cabin category. That traveler paid a separate checked bag charge the same trip. The recurring frustration is not the size chart, it is not knowing which bag a given gate agent will wave through.

The practical response travelers settle on matches what Wizz Air’s own pricing rewards. Buy WIZZ Priority or the checked tier you need before you reach the gate. A charge decided at the counter tends to run higher than the same bag booked online.

What Wizz Air does not publish

Wizz Air does not list a flat euro price for a first or second checked bag online. Pricing moves by route and travel date, set at booking rather than fixed on the baggage page.

It also does not name a separate oversize fee beyond the 149 x 119 x 171 cm limit above. A larger item likely gets treated as special or sports baggage instead, which Wizz Air books and prices separately.

The bottom line

The Wizz Air baggage policy rewards a traveler who plans ahead. Book the right checked tier before you fly, and either pack light enough for the free under seat bag or pay once for WIZZ Priority.

The free allowance alone will not get a rolling bag into the cabin. Compare what you would spend against a US carrier with our baggage cost tool.

Common questions

What size is the free Wizz Air carry-on bag?

It is 40 x 30 x 20 cm, or 15.7 x 11.8 x 7.9 inches, and it must fit under the seat in front of you.

Does Wizz Air charge for an overhead bag?

Yes. The 55 x 40 x 23 cm trolley bag only comes with WIZZ Priority, which costs EUR 10 to EUR 60 online.

Why did Wizz Air charge me for a bag at the gate that fit?
