This page goes deeper on one part of the policy. The full record is at Fiji Airways Baggage Rules.

The Fiji Airways checked baggage size limit is 158 cm, or 62 in, in total dimensions with handles and wheels. Each piece may weigh up to 30 kg, or 66 lb. That 30 kg piece is unusually generous for a transpacific carrier.

Lite fares get no bag at all. Value gets one, Comfort and Plus get two, and Business from the US West Coast gets three.

The Fiji Airways record prints the allowance and headline fees. This page is the Fiji Airways checked baggage size and piece rules in full. The piece count by fare and route, the 30 kg rule and its hard stop, the peak season excess prices, the oneworld extras, and what stays out of the hold.

Fiji Airways checked baggage size and weight

Fiji Airways’ baggage allowances page sets the piece limit at 158 cm when you add height, width and length, handles and wheels included. That is the same 62 in most carriers use. The weight per piece is where Fiji differs: 30 kg, not 23.

The 30 kg is also the ceiling. A piece over 30 kg is not accepted as checked baggage at all.

It has to be repacked into a separate piece or sent as freight. There is no overweight band to buy your way into: a 31 kg bag is repacked at the counter, not charged.

A bag over 158 cm pays the oversized or bulky item fee. Above 277 cm, or 109 in, and 30 kg, it goes as freight. The checked baggage weight limit guide explains why 158 cm and 23 kg are the usual pair and why Fiji’s 30 kg stands out.

Pieces by fare and route

Fiji Airways moved from a weight allowance to a piece allowance for tickets issued from 15 December 2022. The US routes get the best piece counts on the network.

FareLos Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas, VancouverHonolulu and other international
Lite (Economy)No checked bagNo checked bag
Value (Economy)1 piece up to 30 kg1 piece up to 30 kg
Comfort and Plus (Economy)2 pieces up to 30 kg each2 pieces up to 30 kg each
Biz Value and Biz Plus (Business)3 pieces up to 30 kg each2 pieces up to 30 kg each

The Los Angeles, San Francisco, Honolulu and Vancouver allowance applies whenever the flight starts or ends in those cities. An infant gets one piece up to 10 kg plus a stroller.

The Fiji Link domestic allowance is far smaller, 15 kg pieces at 115 cm. A separate domestic ticket is a trap; on a single ticket the international allowance carries through.

The Fiji Airways baggage fees page compares Lite plus a bought bag against Value with the bag included.

oneworld status adds a bag

Fiji Airways is a oneworld member and honors the alliance tiers. Emerald members get one additional bag on any ticket.

Sapphire members get one additional bag when the ticket includes zero or one bag. They get nothing extra when it already includes two or more. The extra bag is 30 kg on an international flight and 15 kg on a domestic only one.

What excess costs, and when it can be refused

Fiji Airways accepts excess baggage on a space available basis and collects the fee at the airport. Its excess baggage rates page states that an accepted extra piece may not travel on the same flight.

Carriage is not guaranteed. On Pacific Island routes that is a real constraint on small aircraft in peak season.

Extra piece up to 30 kg, peak periodRate per piece
Los Angeles, San Francisco, Honolulu to Samoa or VanuatuUSD 380
Los Angeles, San Francisco, Honolulu to TongaUSD 480
Dallas to Samoa or VanuatuUSD 460
Other US cities to Samoa or VanuatuUSD 400
Bulky item from the US to Samoa or VanuatuUSD 290

Peak periods are 1 June to 15 July and 15 November to 31 December. The Pacific Islands column means Samoa and Vanuatu.

Outside those windows the airport rates sit under headings by departure city on the same page, and prepaid extra bags are cheaper than airport ones. The baggage cost calculator gives a working estimate.

The general guide to overweight and oversize baggage fees shows how Fiji’s per piece pricing compares with carriers that charge by band or by kilo.

What Fiji Airways bans from the hold

The allowances page repeats the IATA rule in plain words. Spare or loose batteries of any type are not allowed in checked baggage, even in their original packaging.

Power banks are spare batteries, so they ride in the cabin. The site’s page on power banks on a plane covers the watt-hour limits.

Fiji Airways also refuses mattresses as baggage and requires woven plastic checkered bags over 7 kg to be shrink wrapped or boxed. It warns that valuables, medication and documents in a checked bag travel at the passenger’s own risk. Fragile items must be packed to freight standard.

Connections and codeshares

Fiji Airways prints its connection rule. On a single ticket that includes a Fiji Link domestic sector, the international allowance applies throughout.

On separate tickets, each ticket’s allowance applies to its own flights. On a codeshare, the marketing carrier’s baggage rule applies to the whole journey. Otherwise the DOT most significant carrier rule governs.

Through checked bags from an international flight must be collected at the first point of entry. They clear Customs and Biosecurity before the domestic sector. That is a Nadi reality, not a fee.

Packing to 30 kg and 158 cm

A 30 kg allowance changes the usual advice. The case can be heavier and larger, but 158 cm still binds, and a 30 kg bag is hard on wheels and handles.

The Samsonite Omni PC 28 inch fits 158 cm by the manufacturer’s dimensions. It is large enough that the weight limit, not the tape, is the constraint.

The Travelpro Maxlite 5 25 inch is the choice for the return leg, when island purchases go in a second piece. An Etekcity digital luggage scale matters more here than anywhere. At 30.5 kg the bag is repacked at the counter, not charged.

The bottom line

The Fiji Airways checked baggage size limit is 158 cm per piece. The weight limit is 30 kg with no overweight band above it. Lite gets nothing, Value one piece, Comfort and Plus two, Business three from the West Coast and Dallas, and oneworld status adds one.

Extra pieces are USD 380 to 480 in peak season to the islands and may not fly with you. Keep every battery in the cabin, book domestic connections on the same ticket, and weigh before you leave.
