Fiji Airways Lost Baggage

Checked against the airline on 4 Sep 2026Official source

This page goes deeper on one part of the policy. The full record is at Fiji Airways Baggage Rules.

Fiji Airways declares a bag irretrievably lost 21 days after you report it at the airport. Until then it is delayed, and the airline reimburses essential purchases against receipts.

A Fiji Airways lost baggage claim runs on that 21 day clock. The airport report is where everything starts.

The airline publishes an unusually complete baggage services page. It names the tracker, the expense rules, the claim email and every deadline.

This page pulls those together and adds the federal rules that apply on US flights. It also covers what happens with a bag misconnected at Nadi.

How to report a bag that did not arrive

Go to the Baggage Service desk in the arrivals hall before you leave the airport. At smaller stations, find the local Fiji Airways representative.

Staff create a Property Irregularity Report and give you a reference number. Fiji Airways says to quote that number in every follow up.

Give an accurate description of the bag, and be ready to describe the contents. Keep your e-ticket, the baggage receipts and the tag stubs. The airline asks for all of them later.

If you could not report before leaving, the time limits still apply, so use the online claim route the same day. Our guide to reporting a missing bag covers what to write.

Tracking a delayed Fiji Airways bag

Fiji Airways searches through WorldTracer, the tracing system it says more than 400 airlines share. Because the airline is a oneworld member, you can also enter your file reference in the oneworld baggage tracker. It shows the WorldTracer status for any member airline except American and two Japanese domestic affiliates.

Allow up to 24 hours after you get the reference number for the network search. The airline’s stated aim is to return the bag within 24 to 48 hours.

Regional flights take longer because of lower frequency, and international arrivals pass through quarantine and customs first. For what each status means, see how to track a lost bag.

A tracker in the bag shortens the wait. An Apple AirTag 4 pack covers a family’s luggage.

A Tile by Life360 tracker works with Android. A live dot at Nadi while the file still says tracing gives the desk something concrete to act on.

Essential purchases while the bag is delayed

Fiji Airways reimburses essential items such as toiletries and basic clothing. The condition is that you filed the Property Irregularity Report in the baggage hall.

It requires receipts for every reasonable, actual and verifiable expense. Whatever it pays out is deducted from the final settlement if the bag is never found.

Send the receipts, the PIR number, your flight details and your address within 21 days of the bag’s return. The airline uses the Out of Pocket Expense option on its online claim form for this. It says reimbursement takes 21 to 28 days from the date it receives the claim.

On flights to or from the United States, federal rules also require reimbursement of reasonable expenses. No arbitrary daily cap is allowed. Our delayed baggage guide explains how to present the receipts.

When delayed becomes lost, and how to claim

If the bag is not located within 21 days of your airport report, Fiji Airways declares it irretrievably lost. The missing baggage claim process then begins. Claims go by email to baggage.claims@fijiairways.com with the incident details, flight details and proof of travel.

Every claim needs an itemized list with each item’s description, manufacturer and age, plus proof of purchase or ownership. The airline deducts depreciation where it considers that appropriate. Legal action on any claim must start within two years of the arrival date.

What Fiji Airways pays

Fiji Airways states its international liability for loss, delay or damage as SDR 1,131 per passenger, roughly 1,500 USD. That figure is out of date.

The Montreal Convention limit rose to 1,519 SDR on 28 December 2024, as the US Department of Transportation confirms. Every Fiji Airways flight to the United States falls under that convention. Cite the current figure in your claim.

Domestic carriage inside Fiji on Fiji Link runs on lower limits. Checked baggage is capped at FJD 1,000 per passenger and cabin baggage at FJD 200. Read how lost luggage compensation is calculated before you value the contents.

Damaged bags

Report damage at the Baggage Service desk before leaving the airport, or within 7 days of receiving the bag at the latest. Fiji Airways says accepting a bag without complaint is evidence it arrived in good condition.

Keep the bag for inspection. Get authorization before paying for a repair or replacement, or the cost may be excluded.

The airline may send the bag to an authorized repair center or ask you to take it there. It may also approve a shop of your choice after seeing a quote. It excludes normal wear, over packed bags and manufacturer defects.

On US itineraries, federal rules stop an airline excluding wheels, handles and straps. That matters because Fiji’s domestic exclusions list exactly those. Our damaged luggage claims guide covers the rest.

Items missing from a checked bag must be reported within 7 days of arrival on international travel, or 24 hours on domestic. A police report is required. The online claim form follows within 30 days of the report.

What travelers report about Fiji Airways lost baggage

Traveler accounts of Fiji Airways lost baggage cases cluster around the Nadi connection. A bag that misses a tight connection from Los Angeles onto an island flight usually follows on the next service.

On thin routes that can be a day later. The airport desk answers faster than the email claims address.

Claims that pay out have a PIR from the arrivals hall, receipts, and an itemized list with ages and proof of purchase. Claims that stall were filed without the reference number or with round guesses for value.

Prevention

Keep anything valuable, fragile or perishable in the cabin, inside the Fiji Airways baggage allowance. The airline says it may refuse such items as checked baggage.

On domestic flights it accepts no liability for them at all. The Fiji Airways checked baggage page covers the hold rules by fare.

Tag the outside. A pair of Travelambo leather luggage tags with a phone number and email still reaches you when the airline tag tears off. Put an itinerary printout inside the bag too.

The bottom line

Report at the desk before you leave, keep the PIR number, and track the file through the oneworld tracker. Buy essentials against receipts and claim them within 21 days of the bag’s return. If the bag is not found in 21 days, file the Fiji Airways lost baggage claim by email.

Attach the itemized list. The airline’s baggage services page sets out every rule above.
