Garuda Indonesia flies no nonstop route to the United States. Add a US city to the ticket, and the Garuda Indonesia baggage allowance switches. It goes from a weight limit to a piece count.
That catches travelers connecting home through Amsterdam or Seoul on a codeshare leg. Everywhere else on the network, Garuda still counts baggage in kilograms.
Carry-on and personal item allowance
Economy passengers get one cabin bag up to 56 cm by 36 cm by 23 cm. That is 22 by 14 by 9 inches, capped at 7 kg. The figures come from Garuda’s own baggage page.
Business class gets two pieces at 7 kg each instead of one. Smaller CRJ and ATR aircraft on some domestic hops use a smaller bag: 41 cm by 34 cm by 17 cm. The weight cap stays at 7 kg.
A personal item travels free on top of that limit. Garuda lists a laptop bag, handbag, umbrella, small camera, reading material, a collapsible stroller or a wheelchair. No size limit is published for it, only the list of what qualifies.

Checked baggage on domestic Indonesia routes
Domestic Indonesian flights run on the weight concept. The allowance depends on cabin.

No single bag may weigh more than 32 kg, or 70 lb. A 20 kg economy allowance packed into one suitcase is fine. Two bags at 25 kg each are not, even though the combined weight matches.
Checked baggage on international routes
The Garuda Indonesia baggage allowance on international economy tickets is 30 kg checked. Business gets 40 kg and first gets 50 kg. All three are still measured by weight, not by bag count.
Garuda raises those figures on a few routes. Flights to and from Japan get 46 kg in economy and 64 kg in first. Jeddah and Medina flights add 5 liters of zamzam water on top of the normal allowance.
Compare that against a connecting carrier like Cathay Pacific if your routing passes through Hong Kong instead.
The piece concept on tickets that touch the United States
Once a US airport enters the itinerary, the rule changes. This usually happens through a codeshare connection on a partner such as Korean Air. Garuda then switches to two checked pieces.
Economy is capped at 23 kg per piece, and business at 32 kg per piece.
That lines up with a US rule. Baggage on any itinerary that includes a US city must be quoted in pieces, not weight. The Department of Transportation spells out that requirement.
A traveler flying Jakarta to New York through a partner hub sees a different Garuda Indonesia baggage allowance. A traveler flying Jakarta to Tokyo direct sees the old one. The gap catches people who assume one set of numbers applies everywhere.
GarudaMiles and SkyTeam elite bonuses
GarudaMiles status adds extra checked weight on top of the fare allowance. Silver cardholders get 5 kg more. Gold and Executive Plus members get 15 kg more.
Platinum or GarudaMiles Infinite Card holders get 20 kg more. None of those bonuses apply during the Hajj travel period.
SkyTeam Elite members get 10 kg or one extra piece. Elite Plus members get 20 kg or one extra piece. The two programs can overlap, so it is worth asking the counter agent which bonus actually applies.
What happens if you go over
Excess baggage under the weight concept runs 8 USD per kg on short zones near Indonesia. It climbs to 13 USD per kg on the next band. The longest bands run as high as 46 USD per kg.
On tickets billed under the piece concept, an extra piece costs a flat 150 USD instead.
Garuda has not published a separate domestic excess chart. That is a real gap, so price a domestic overage against the international rate until the counter confirms otherwise.

What travelers actually run into at the gate
The 7 kg carry-on limit is not enforced the same way everywhere. Travelers flying out of Sydney describe gate staff weighing every cabin bag closely. The same limit reportedly goes unchecked on flights leaving Denpasar, where bags were not weighed on departure at all.
Other reports describe a bag gate checked on one flight and the identical bag waved through on the next. There is no obvious pattern to it.
Pack to the real limit anyway, especially out of Australia. Treat a free pass out of Bali as luck, not as the rule.
A carrier such as Singapore Airlines draws the same complaint from travelers on regional routes out of the same airports.
The bottom line
The Garuda Indonesia baggage allowance is generous by weight almost everywhere it flies. The one real curveball is any itinerary that touches the United States.
