What the bags cost

FeeAmount
First checked bag$200 to Hong Kong, rising to $260 to other Americas zones, for a piece beyond the free allowance from the US
Overweight bag$150 flat, all zones, for bags over the free weight but under 32kg/70lb
Oversize bag$200 flat per piece, 158cm-203cm / 62in-80in total dimension

Economy Light includes 1 checked bag (23kg); Essential and Flex include 2 checked bags (23kg each). Cabin baggage is 1 piece up to 7kg plus 1 personal item, the same across all three Economy fares. Cathay states its policy moved from a weight allowance to a piece allowance. Premium Economy, Business, and First allowances are not listed on the fare comparison page; they route to the Baggage Calculator. Any single checked piece, any fare or cabin, is capped at 32kg/70lb per the Conditions of Carriage.

Cathay Pacific will not give you a carry-on size in inches or centimeters. Not even on its own site. It states a weight limit and stops there, then hands you off to a calculator for the actual measurements.

What Cathay Pacific actually confirms about your carry-on

Across every Economy fare, Cathay’s own fare comparison page lists cabin baggage as one piece, 7 kg. That works out to about 15 lb. The airline states only the kilogram figure.

You also get one small personal item. Think handbag, laptop bag, small backpack, camera bag, or briefcase. Cathay does not publish a separate weight or size cap for that second piece.

These are the real, current Cathay Pacific baggage rules for the cabin. What is missing is any inch or centimeter number at all.

Why the carry-on question routes to a calculator

Cathay’s carry-on FAQ page skips dimensions entirely. It sends readers to its Baggage Calculator instead.

Even Cathay’s own Conditions of Carriage document stays vague. A bag must ‘fit under the seat in front of you or in an enclosed storage compartment,’ full stop, no measurements attached.

The Cathay Pacific baggage allowance for cabin size is set by cabin class and membership tier at the moment you search. Nothing is printed in advance. Run your bag through our carry-on size checker instead of guessing.

Checked bags, by Economy fare

The cheapest Economy fare, Light, includes one checked bag at 23 kg. Essential and Flex include two checked bags at 23 kg each.

Cathay’s own fare comparison page says its baggage policy ‘has shifted from a weight allowance to a piece allowance.’ That is why these numbers now read as bag counts, not a single pooled weight.

Cathay members may also get extra allowance by status tier. The exact bonus is not spelled out on the page we checked.

Premium cabins and the 32 kg ceiling

Premium Economy, Business, and First allowances were not listed on Cathay’s fare comparison page. Those cabins route to the same Baggage Calculator as carry-on does.

One number does hold across every fare and cabin. Cathay Pacific caps any single checked piece at 32 kg, about 70 lb. That figure comes straight from the airline’s Conditions of Carriage.

The 158 cm oversize line and what it costs

A bag becomes oversized once length, width, and height add up to more than 158 cm, or 62 in. Cathay will still carry it up to 203 cm, or 80 in, total. Beyond that needs approval from reservations, at least three working days ahead.

Add a bag beyond your free allowance and Cathay charges by destination zone. From the US, that fee starts near 200 dollars to Hong Kong and climbs toward 260 dollars for other Americas zones.

An overweight bag under 32 kg costs a flat 150 dollars, the same rate everywhere. An oversized bag runs a flat 200 dollars per piece.

How that compares, and a quirky exception

On extra piece fees, the Cathay Pacific baggage allowance lands close to fellow oneworld carrier British Airways baggage rules. Check both halves of a connecting itinerary before you fly. Our baggage cost estimator can total a specific route faster than the zone math by hand.

Cathay’s rules get oddly specific past standard baggage, too. A religious idol in Economy can travel boxed, up to 60 by 36 by 36 cm and under 15 kg, on its own purchased seat.

Diplomatic bags use the same box size but can weigh up to 32 kg. A cello sized instrument also needs its own seat, booked through reservations, not online.

What travelers report about the Cathay Pacific baggage allowance

TripAdvisor forum threads describe an inconsistent picture, not a strict one. Frequent flyers report their personal item almost never gets weighed, even combined with a full 7 kg cabin bag, on routes like Hong Kong to Bangkok or London to Perth. Cabin crew and check-in staff, by most accounts, simply do not reach for a scale.

The leniency has a limit. Travelers report far more scrutiny once someone shows up with three or four separate carry-on pieces, since a stray bag count draws attention that a slightly heavy single bag does not. Cathay keeps the right to enforce the printed weight at any point, so the lenient pattern is not a guarantee.

No community source pointed to one station as tougher than another for this carrier. The consistent theme is that the Cathay Pacific baggage allowance gets enforced unevenly and by feel, not measured bag by bag at every gate.

The bottom line

The Cathay Pacific baggage allowance is plain on weight and fees but quiet on carry-on size. One bag at 7 kg, one personal item, 23 kg checked bags, and a hard 32 kg ceiling are all confirmed straight from Cathay’s own pages.

The inches and centimeters for your cabin bag depend on your cabin and status. Check the calculator, or our size checker, before you leave for the airport.
