HK Express does not fly to the United States at all. If you searched for the HK Express baggage allowance while booking a US departure, stop right there. The airline’s whole network sits inside Asia, out of Hong Kong.
Most travelers checking the HK Express baggage allowance from the US are connecting onward from Hong Kong. Maybe to Tokyo, Seoul, or Bangkok on the second leg of a longer trip. That second leg has its own rules, and they are worth knowing before you pack.
HK Express is owned by Cathay Pacific. It is tempting to assume Cathay’s baggage rules carry over to its budget sibling. They do not.

Carry-on and personal item limits
The HK Express cabin bag limit is 56 by 36 by 23 centimeters. In inches, that is roughly 22 by 14 by 9. The personal item allowed alongside it is smaller, at 40 by 25 by 20 centimeters, or about 15.7 by 10 by 8 inches.
Both share one combined weight cap of 7 kilograms, about 15.4 pounds. That figure comes straight from the airline’s own carry-on baggage page. It is tighter than what most US travelers expect from a domestic carrier.
Checked baggage weight, size, and fees
Checked bags top out at 158 centimeters, or 62 inches, in combined length, width, and height. Each bag can carry 20 or 32 kilograms, depending on the allowance you buy. No single checked bag may pass 32 kilograms under any allowance.
Buying a checked bag at booking runs about 40 US dollars for 20 kilograms. The 32 kilogram option runs about 55 dollars. Wait and add one during online check-in, and the 20 kilogram price climbs to roughly 59 dollars.
Leave it until the airport counter and it climbs again, to about 77 dollars. Overweight bags cost roughly 15 US dollars per kilogram over the limit. Book your bag early and skip that penalty entirely.
What each fare bundle actually includes
This is where HK Express baggage allowance rules catch people out. The fare names do not match what most travelers would guess. Essential sounds like it covers the basics, but it skips the cabin bag entirely.
An Essential fare gives you a personal item and a checked bag instead. Lite does the opposite: a cabin bag, but no checked bag at all. Only Max includes both.

Ultra Lite and Essential flyers who need a cabin bag can add one at the airport counter. That costs about 45 US dollars. It still beats the gate fee for an oversized bag, which runs about 102 dollars per piece once you reach the gate.
How strictly the limits get enforced
Community reports describe enforcement that swings hard by station. Departing Hong Kong, several travelers say their cabin bag was never weighed. One called the airline not so strict when carrying hand luggage only.
Japan tells a different story. Travelers flying out of Fukuoka and Nagoya reported thorough weight checks and gate charges for oversized carry-ons. One traveler described Kuala Lumpur as weighing every bag before security, on the return leg home.
Do not plan your packing around a lenient outbound flight. The return leg from a stricter station can catch what Hong Kong let through on the way out.
