A JetSMART checked bag at the airport counter can cost close to three times the online price. That gap is the whole story behind JetSMART baggage fees. It holds true in Santiago, in Buenos Aires, and in Lima.
JetSMART is South America’s low-cost upstart. Like most ultra low cost carriers, it makes its real money on the bags, not the seat.
Here is the part that trips up US travelers first. Nothing but a small personal item rides free. A normal carry-on bag is a paid add-on here, not a standard inclusion.
What actually flies for free
Every JetSMART fare includes one small personal item. It can measure up to 45 by 35 by 25 centimeters and 10 kilograms. That is the only free piece.
A full size carry-on, up to 55 by 35 by 25 centimeters and 10 kilograms, costs extra on every fare. Checked bags work the same way.
Up to five checked bags are allowed per passenger. Each one is capped at 158 linear centimeters and 23 kilograms. Every single one is purchased separately.
JetSMART baggage fees change by country, not just by fare
JetSMART prices its add-ons in local currency. The numbers are not simple conversions of each other from one country to the next. On the carrier’s own optional services page, a carry-on bought at booking starts from 12,900 Chilean pesos in Chile.
In Argentina that same carry-on starts from 9,990 Argentine pesos. On Peru and other international routes it starts from 7.50 US dollars.
A first checked bag shows the same split. It runs from 13,000 Chilean pesos in Chile, from 12,590 Argentine pesos in Argentina, and from 8 US dollars in Peru.
Compare that with LATAM, the region’s dominant traditional carrier. JetSMART baggage fees look small only until a few bags get added at the airport.

Overweight and oversize charges
A bag between 23 and 32 kilograms draws an overweight charge. It is sold only at the airport counter. Listed prices start near 21,000 Chilean pesos or 30 US dollars, depending on the country.
JetSMART will not carry anything over 32 kilograms at all. Oversize items between 158 and 230 linear centimeters cost extra too, and up to three are allowed per passenger.
Those oversize fees are not sold at the boarding gate. Surfboards get a specific exception, up to 300 linear centimeters.
Buy the bag when you buy the ticket
JetSMART’s own pricing ladder is explicit about the cost of waiting. A Chilean carry-on near 12,900 pesos online rises to roughly 17,400 pesos after purchase. At the counter or gate it climbs past 30,000 pesos.

Three airlines wearing one name
JetSMART is not one legal carrier. It operates as separate companies in Chile, Argentina, and Peru. Each one is licensed by its own national aviation authority.
That is why the fee schedule splits by country rather than by route. All three sell under the same brand and the same fare rules.
A US traveler booking Santiago to Lima is really crossing between two of these entities on one itinerary. JetSMART also markets in Colombia and other regional markets without necessarily flying its own domestic routes there.
What travelers actually get caught by
Enforcement of the free personal item rule is where reviewers report the most friction. One traveler on a flight between Mendoza and Salta described an unexpected charge for a small backpack under 5 kilograms.
That same bag had flown free on an earlier JetSMART segment without any issue. The rule had not changed between the two flights.
What changed was how closely gate staff measured and weighed the bag. Treat the 45 by 35 by 25 centimeter limit as a hard line every time, not a suggestion.

JetSMART baggage fees reward one habit above all others. Buy every bag, checked or carry-on, at the moment you book the ticket.
Waiting until check-in or the gate can roughly triple the price. The exact number depends on whether you are flying within Chile, Argentina, or Peru.
