What the Lion Air baggage allowance covers today
Every fare now includes one cabin bag up to 7 kilograms. It must fit within 40 by 30 by 20 centimeters. On top of that, one checked bag up to 10 kilograms flies free.
Lion Air says this applies to domestic and international flights alike. It also covers every fare class booked on or after July 17, 2025, per Lion Air’s own baggage announcement. Tickets bought before that date kept the older allowance they were sold with.
Why the free checked weight shrank
Lion Air called the change an offer of more practical options. That is standard airline language for a fare unbundling. A 10 kilogram checked bag covers little more than a change of clothes and shoes for most travelers.
Anyone with a fuller Lion Air baggage allowance from an older trip should now budget for extra weight. The old numbers no longer apply on new bookings.
Cabin baggage and whether it actually gets weighed
The 7 kilogram cabin limit is easy to state and harder to enforce at a busy gate. Lion Air’s own materials describe check-in staff weighing baggage at the counter. That covers checked bags with certainty, and cabin bags less consistently depending on the airport.
A cabin bag that will not fit the sizer or the overhead bin moves to the hold. Lion Air’s conditions of carriage put that under safety rules, not the scale.
Buying extra baggage before you fly
Lion Air sells prepaid checked baggage in fixed tiers: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 kilograms. Buying ahead online is reliably cheaper than paying at the airport counter. That is standard practice across budget carriers in this region.
If you are pricing a full trip, run the numbers with the baggage cost tool first. Doing that before you commit to a fare avoids a surprise at check-in.
What happens if you show up over the limit
Lion Air has billed an Excess Baggage Ticket since December 1, 2024. It applies to bags over the free limit or outside the size rule, in minimum 5 kilogram increments. The airline does not publish a flat per kilogram rate on its public pages.
The honest answer is that the exact fee depends on your route and fare. Prepaying online removes the guesswork. It is almost always the cheaper path too.

Community accounts of Indonesian domestic flying describe a real shift over time. One longtime flyer of Indonesian carriers recalled Lion Air once allowing up to 30 kilograms on domestic routes. Staff scarcely worried if a bag ran over that line, the traveler said.
That looseness has faded as Indonesian carriers tightened enforcement across the board. Lion Air’s shift to 10 kilograms confirms the trend, not just stricter gate agents. Do not book on the assumption that a generous Lion Air baggage allowance from a past trip still applies.
How Lion Air compares regionally
A 10 kilogram free checked bag is thin next to some Southeast Asian rivals. Scoot and AirAsia run similarly stripped down base fares in the same market. Singapore Airlines builds more checked weight into its standard economy ticket by comparison.
Sister brand Batik Air carries a separate, larger checked allowance under the same parent group. If your trip mixes legs on different Lion Group brands, treat each ticket on its own. One ticket’s allowance does not carry over to another brand’s flight.
The bottom line
