Economy passengers get one cabin bag. It cannot exceed 7kg, or 15 lb.
Business and Business Suite passengers get two pieces instead, combined at 14kg, or 31 lb. Each single piece still tops out at 7kg, or 15 lb.
The bag also has to fit the bin. Overhead space allows 56 x 36 x 23cm, roughly 22 x 14 x 9 inches. Under seat space is smaller, at 25 x 36 x 25cm, about 10 x 14 x 10 inches.
Run your bag through the size checker before you fly. Weigh it at home too. A gate agent with a hanging scale is a worse place to learn you are over.
Your personal item shares the weight instead of adding to it
Malaysia Airlines allows one free personal item. That covers a briefcase, handbag, laptop bag, or small camera bag. A duty free purchase, a walking aid, an overcoat, or infant items also qualify.
No separate weight allowance is published for it, and that is the catch. It sits inside the same 7kg or 14kg cabin total. A heavy laptop bag eats into the same limit as your rollaboard.
The Malaysia Airlines baggage allowance is priced by the kilogram, not the bag
This is where the Malaysia Airlines baggage allowance diverges most from the US pattern. US carriers sell a first bag and a second bag. Malaysia Airlines sells a total weight per fare instead, called the Weight Concept.
Economy Value fares include 20kg, or 44 lb. Economy Basic steps up to 25kg, or 55 lb. Economy Flex reaches 35kg, or 77 lb, and its rebooking cost is only the fare difference.

Some routes still use the piece system
Flights connecting to Africa or the Americas work differently. Malaysia Airlines prices those under a piece concept, not the weight concept. Check Manage Booking if your itinerary touches those regions, since your printed allowance may read as a bag count instead of a kilogram total.
Buying extra baggage before you travel
Extra weight can be added through Manage Booking or by phone. The airline advertises a 20 percent discount for buying online instead of at the airport. Purchases must be made at least 24 hours before departure.
Once bought, extra weight is not refundable. It also cannot be transferred to another traveler.

Oversize bags and the point where it becomes freight
Standard checked bags need a total of length, width, and height under 158cm, or 62 in. Between 158cm and 204cm, or 62 to 80 in, a bag counts as oversized. That picks up a surcharge on top of any excess weight charge.
Past 204cm, or 80 in, Malaysia Airlines will not check the item as luggage at all. It has to move as freight through MASKargo instead. That is a different process, and a different counter entirely.
What travelers actually report about enforcement
Malaysia Airlines publishes one carry-on number. Whether your bag actually gets weighed depends on the agent working that gate.
Some travelers describe a relaxed check. Others report a strict weigh at Sydney to Kuala Lumpur, with extra bags turned away outright.
Carrying three small bags draws more attention than one consolidated carry-on. Travelers report that agents who spot a handbag, a camera bag, and a laptop bag together are more likely to pull one aside. That bag then gets charged as excess.
The excess baggage math causes its own confusion. Some travelers report the per kilogram rate applying from a lower baseline than their actual free allowance. A bag only a few kilos over can cost more than expected, and rates vary by route.
How this compares to other carriers
