Carry-on: still weighed, even in economy
On international flights, Qantas Economy gets one overhead bag and one personal item. Combined, they cannot exceed 7 kg, or 15 lb. There is no separate underseat bag in that cabin.
Premium Economy, Business, and First add an underseat bag. Together the three pieces max out at 14 kg (30 lb). No single piece can pass 10 kg (22 lb).

Checked baggage by cabin
Every checked piece has to stay under 158cm (62in) total. That means adding length, width, and depth together. Qantas calls it the total dimension, not linear inches.
On flights to and from the Americas, Economy includes one bag. Premium Economy and Business include two. First includes three.
Every piece in every cabin shares the same 32 kg (70 lb) weight ceiling.
That is a simpler structure than the Qantas baggage allowance for flights within Australia, where Economy drops to a single 23 kg bag. If your trip mixes a US departure with a domestic Australian hop, pack to the tighter allowance.
No overweight fee, just a hard wall at 70 pounds
Airlines like Delta and American charge a separate overweight fee once a bag crosses 50 pounds. That is on top of any bag fee. Qantas skips that middle tier entirely.
A checked piece is either under 32 kg and free within your allowance, or it is over 32 kg. Qantas will not check an overweight piece as a normal bag at all. There is no fee that buys your way past the wall.

The published Qantas baggage allowance is one thing. Whether a gate agent enforces it is another, and this is where travelers report the most friction. A FlyerTalk thread on the question has run for years and still gets replies, and it shows the same pattern over and over: some flights get a full sizer and scale check, others get waved through with an obviously heavy bag.
Coverage of Qantas’s own enforcement push backs that up. Reporting on the airline’s carry-on crackdown describes staff pulling bags to weigh them, specifically on busy domestic routes where overhead space runs out fastest. Travelers consistently report that international flights and quieter departures see far less of this.
The practical takeaway is not to assume a pass just because it worked last time. Weigh your carry-on at home if you are anywhere near 7 kg, especially on a full domestic Qantas flight, and treat a calm gate on your last trip as luck, not policy. Extra bags and what they cost
A piece beyond your included allowance costs US$210 at the airport, on a flight departing North or South America. Buying it online ahead of time is cheaper. Qantas prices that option by route, cabin, and frequent flyer tier, so there is no single flat number to quote.
Either way, the 32 kg cap still applies to the extra bag. Compare a route you fly often with our baggage cost tool before you assume Qantas costs more than a US carrier. On one extra suitcase, it usually does not.
Frequent flyer tier bumps
Qantas Frequent Flyer status changes the included count, not the weight cap per bag. A Platinum member flying Economy to the Americas gets three checked pieces instead of one. Platinum and Platinum One members in Business or First get four pieces, each still capped at 32 kg.
None of that appears automatically at booking. Confirm your tier benefit is attached to the reservation before you show up with a third suitcase.
