The personal item runs up to 40 x 30 x 10 cm (16 x 12 x 4 in), or 80 cm (32 in) total. It counts inside those same weight numbers.
A short list of items skip that weight math entirely. A laptop, a small backpack or briefcase, a light camera, an umbrella and reading material can all ride along uncounted. A full size tote or duffel used as your personal item does count, and that is the part travelers miss.
Checked bags change by fare code, not just cabin
STARLUX’s free checked allowance depends on the exact fare class booked. Cabin alone does not decide it. On US routes, the lowest Economy fare gets one free bag at 23 kg (50 lb).
Most other Economy fares and Premium Economy get two bags at 23 kg each. Business gets two bags at 32 kg (70 lb) each. Every checked bag caps at 158 cm (62 in) in combined length, width and height.

The discount Economy row is worth checking twice. STARLUX’s own tariff gives that fare one free bag on Asia flights but two on US routes. A traveler who checked the wrong regional page could expect less than they actually get.
What the STARLUX baggage allowance costs when you go over
An extra piece beyond your free allowance runs 200 dollars on US routes. On regional Asia flights it runs 150 dollars. Overweight bags between 23 and 32 kg add 100 dollars on US flights.
Anything past 32 kg adds 400 dollars instead. Oversized bags follow a similar split: 200 dollars from 158 to 203 cm, and 400 dollars beyond that. Every figure here comes straight from STARLUX’s published rules.
These fees apply per bag. A suitcase that is both overweight and oversized can draw both charges at once. Weighing your bag at home is the cheapest insurance against that.
What travelers actually run into at the gate
Direct reports about STARLUX gate enforcement are still thin. The carrier only started flying in 2020, and its US routes are newer still. The closest signal comes from fellow Taipei hub carriers.
Travelers on EVA Air describe staff walking the boarding area with a handheld scale. One forum thread put the check rate near 80 percent when a passenger has no checked bag. Posters there put the practical tolerance at 1 to 2 kg over the printed limit.

Flying STARLUX to and from the US
STARLUX flies its Airbus A350 nonstop between Taipei and several US cities. On a flight that long, the weight limits above matter more than they would on a short hop. The airline also codeshares with Alaska Airlines.
