What checked baggage actually costs

Transavia sells checked baggage in fixed weight blocks, not by the bag. The tiers are 15, 20, 25, 30, 40 or 50 kg, spread across up to 5 pieces. Each single piece has a 32 kg cap and a 165 cm linear cap.

You buy the block during booking, later in your account, or at check-in. The block covers your whole trip rather than one bag. Prices differ by route and by how close to departure you book.

On Netherlands and Belgium departures, Transavia prices a 15 kg block from about 30 EUR to 58 EUR online. The airport price for the same block rises to about 70 EUR. French departures run from about 30 EUR to 87 EUR online and about 60 to 180 EUR at the airport.

Senegal routes start near 74 EUR online and climb past 160 EUR at the airport. These are the widest fee bands on any Transavia route.

Amsterdam to Beirut is the one route Transavia caps at 30 kg total per person. No extra kilos are sellable once you hit that ceiling, even at the airport counter.

A single kilogram block can be split across up to 5 pieces, which matters for a family traveling together. Buying one 40 kg block and splitting it across two bags is usually cheaper than buying two separate blocks. Transavia prices by total weight, not by piece count.

Keep every piece under the 32 kg single bag cap regardless of how the total block is split. A single overweight case still draws the per kilo airport charge. That holds even if the group’s combined weight sits under the block you bought.

Prepay early, every time

Transavia states plainly that airport rates run higher than website rates. The gap is largest on the routes above and grows as departure gets closer.

Booking the kilogram block during your original reservation tends to land at the cheaper end of the published range. Waiting until later in your account, or worse, the airport, pushes the price up.

Overweight and the cabin bag upgrade

Go over your purchased checked weight and Transavia charges 15 EUR per extra kilogram at the airport. That is on top of whatever block you already paid for.

The cabin bag upgrade works the same way. Booking it in advance costs from about 12.99 EUR one way, and from about 39 EUR on Senegal routes.

None of Transavia’s fares include free checked baggage. Every checked kilogram is paid on Basic, Smart and Max alike, so the fare choice never touches the hold.

A US traveler connecting onto a separate Transavia ticket gets only the free personal item without a Transavia charge. Anything larger needs its own booking on Transavia’s site before the connecting flight. The transatlantic airline’s allowance does not carry over to a separate Transavia reservation.

Waivers and elite status

Transavia’s fee pages make no mention of a credit card that waives checked baggage. There is no elite tier that includes checked weight for free either.

Transavia is a short haul, low cost carrier. It does not publish the kind of branded card waiver a US traveler might expect from a legacy carrier.
