Vietnam Airlines gives Economy fliers on US routes two free checked bags, not one. That beats what most US travelers expect. It is worth knowing before you pay for a bag you already get for free.

The US route exception that beats most peers
On Vietnam Airlines flights between Vietnam and the Americas, Economy gets two checked pieces. Each piece can weigh up to 23 kg (50 lb). Premium Economy gets the same two pieces at 23 kg each.
Business gets two pieces at 32 kg (70 lb) each on those routes. Compare that to flights within Vietnam or Southeast Asia. There, Economy drops to a single 23 kg piece.
Every checked piece is capped at 158 cm (62 in) for length, width, and height combined. That linear limit holds across all three cabins. The extra US allowance is about piece count and weight, not size.
Carry-on and personal item limits
Tickets issued on or after May 5, 2025 for US, Australia, and Europe routes follow newer rules. Economy gets one carry-on piece up to 10 kg (22 lb) plus a personal item. The combined limit is 12 kg (26 lb).
Business and Premium Economy get two carry-on pieces at 10 kg each, plus a personal item. That totals up to 18 kg (40 lb). The standard carry-on piece tops out at 56 x 36 x 23 cm.
That is about 22 x 14.2 x 9.1 in.
Vietnam Airlines calls the personal item an ‘accessory.’ It tops out at 40 x 30 x 15 cm, close to 15.7 x 11.8 x 5.9 in. On other routes the carry-on piece and accessory share a tighter 10 kg cap instead of 12 kg.
What changed on May 5, 2025
Before that date, hand baggage limits were set mainly by cabin and route type. There was less distinction for US, Australia, and Europe departures. The update carved those three regions out for a slightly higher combined carry-on weight in Economy.
If your ticket was issued before the change date, older limits may still apply to that booking. Vietnam Airlines’ own hand baggage page lists both sets of rules side by side.
Fees Vietnam Airlines does not publish as a flat rate
Vietnam Airlines’ excess baggage page confirms extra bags can be prepaid online at up to 50 percent off. Bags bought at the airport cost more. The page lists no fixed dollar or dong figure for a first excess bag, an overweight bag, or an oversize bag.

Reports describe fliers stopped right before boarding with no chance to repack, since swapping items into checked luggage only works back at the check-in counter.
Local tourism and aviation commentators call the practice heavy handed next to carriers like Singapore Airlines, which weigh bags electronically. Domestic routes tell a different story.
Travelers on travel forums describe the 7 kg domestic carry-on figure as loosely enforced, and several say their bag was never weighed at all. That gap between a strict gate check and a casual one is worth planning around.
Extra allowance for Lotusmiles members
Vietnam Airlines’ Lotusmiles program adds free checked pieces on top of the standard allowance. Titanium and Gold members get one extra piece. Million Miler and Platinum members get two extra pieces.
That stacks with the regional allowance above. A Platinum member on a US route could carry four free checked bags in Economy.
How it stacks up
Two free checked bags in Economy on a transpacific route is generous. Most US legacy carriers charge for a second bag outright. The Vietnam Airlines baggage allowance reads like a throwback by comparison, in a good way.
