ZIPAIR does not hand you a free personal item. Most carriers let you bring a backpack plus a roller bag. ZIPAIR counts everything as carry-on baggage, two pieces total, sharing one 7 kg weight cap.
ZIPAIR baggage rules read differently from most carriers flying into the US. ZIPAIR is a long haul low-cost airline built by Japan Airlines, not a legacy full service brand. The base Standard fare skips checked baggage entirely, and you either buy a package that adds it or pay per bag at booking.
The carry-on system
ZIPAIR allows two carry-on pieces free of charge. Both have fixed dimensions rather than one generic limit. The first piece can measure up to 55 cm by 40 cm by 25 cm, about 21.7 by 15.7 by 9.8 inches.
The second piece is smaller, up to 45 cm by 35 cm by 25 cm, about 17.7 by 13.8 by 9.8 inches. Together, both pieces cannot exceed 7 kg, roughly 15.4 lb. That is a combined limit, not a per bag limit.
A heavy laptop bag eats into what your roller bag can weigh. If your bag will not fit in the overhead rack, ZIPAIR will not board it as hand luggage. That rule holds no matter what the bag weighs.
Checked bags cost money from the first piece
Here is where the ZIPAIR baggage allowance surprises a lot of first time flyers. The Standard fare includes zero checked bags. Fees apply starting with your very first piece, not just a second or third bag.
You can skip the per bag charge by booking the VALUE or PREMIUM service package. Both bundle one 23 kg checked bag into the fare. The BIZ package skips checked baggage but adds 5 kg to your carry-on allowance instead.
What checked baggage actually costs
Checked bags are priced by route, and the fee climbs fast on the longer US legs. A first checked bag from Narita to Seoul currently runs 4,000 yen. Narita to Manila runs 6,000 yen, and Narita to Los Angeles runs 11,000 yen.
Every checked piece can weigh up to 30 kg, about 66 lb. Total dimensions cannot exceed 203 cm added together for length, width, and height. ZIPAIR allows up to five checked pieces per passenger, as long as you pay for each one.
Route by route, the checked side of the zipair baggage allowance is the part that adds up fastest.
Sports gear and oversize items cost more
Golf bags, ski and snowboard bags, and surfboards up to 200 cm get billed at a higher sports rate. That rate runs between 5,500 and 8,000 yen on Narita routes. Bicycles and surfboards longer than 200 cm cost even more, between 8,000 and 13,000 yen from Narita.
These fees sit on top of whatever fare and package you already booked. There is no way to fold a bike into the standard checked allowance.
Buy extra zipair baggage allowance before you leave home
Say your carry-on runs over 7 kg. ZIPAIR lets you purchase up to 8 kg of extra weight, but only through the booking management portal. That purchase has to happen 24 hours or more before departure.
Overweight carry-on fees cannot be paid at the airport on the day you fly. Miss that window and an overweight bag simply gets checked instead, at whatever the route’s checked bag fee happens to be.
How strictly ZIPAIR checks your carry-on
Travelers reviewing ZIPAIR consistently describe the airline weighing bags right at check-in. It is not just a spot check at the gate. Multiple reviews call the 7 kg limit tightly enforced and recommend arriving early because of it.
Some travelers report being asked to shift a laptop into checked luggage when a carry-on ran over. That happened even with unused weight left in their checked allowance. ZIPAIR treats the carry-on cap as fixed, not something you can borrow against.
The recurring complaint is not the weight limit itself. It is confusion over what the fare covers. People expect a bag bundled in, but the Standard fare covers neither a checked piece nor extra carry-on weight.
