Hainan Airlines lets Business Class check two bags at 32 kilograms each on flights out of the United States. Yet it caps every cabin, Business included, to one carry-on bag on those same flights. The Hainan Airlines baggage allowance is not one rule with a class multiplier.

On US departures, Hainan Airlines allows one carry-on bag per passenger, in any cabin. The limit is 10 kilograms (22 pounds) and 115 centimeters (45 inches) of combined length, width and height. These figures come from the airline’s own carry-on baggage page.
That one bag limit is the surprise. On routes outside the United States, Business Class gets two carry-on pieces at the same weight limit each. A traveler connecting through a third country can find the rule tightens specifically on the US leg.
A personal item is also allowed, capped at 30 by 30 by 20 centimeters. That is roughly a small daypack that fits under the seat. Anything larger counts against the one carry-on allowance, not as a second free item.
Checked baggage on US routes uses the piece concept
Economy and Premium Economy passengers get two checked pieces on US flights. Each piece can weigh up to 23 kilograms (50 pounds) and measure up to 158 centimeters (62 inches) combined. Business Class keeps the same two piece count but raises the per bag ceiling to 32 kilograms.
Every checked bag also has a floor. Hainan will not accept anything under 2 kilograms as a standard piece. Very light bags need to be consolidated or repacked.
Forum threads get tangled on the exact US figure. One Tripadvisor thread shows a traveler chasing down whether the US allowance was 20 kilograms or 23 kilograms per bag. They confirmed 23 kilograms directly against the airline’s own site, which is the right instinct.
Domestic China flights run on total weight, not pieces
Inside China, the free checked allowance is a lump sum. Economy gets 20 kilograms and Business gets 30 kilograms, split across however many bags a traveler wants. There is no per bag ceiling the way US routes have one.
A passenger flying Xian to Sanya can check one heavy bag or two lighter ones. The cost is the same either way, as long as the total stays under the limit. This is why a single flat number for the Hainan Airlines baggage allowance never survives contact with a mixed itinerary.
What it costs to go over
The Hainan Airlines baggage allowance covers only what fits under the free limits above. On US routes, a first extra piece runs 250 dollars. A second extra piece runs 330 dollars, per the airline’s excess baggage schedule.
Overweight bags between 23 and 32 kilograms in Economy add another 200 dollars.
Anything between 158 and 203 centimeters draws a 140 dollar oversize charge. Hainan’s documentation notes these charges stack. A bag that is both overweight and oversized pays both fees, not just the higher one.
What travelers actually run into at transit stops
The community pass on this carrier turned up a transit detail the fare rules do not mention. A Tripadvisor poster routed Vienna to Chengdu to Haikou to Bangkok. Through checking was not available for that combination.
Bags had to be collected and rechecked at both Chinese stops. A connection of two hours was described as tight once security and passport control were factored in. A seven hour layover left comfortable room instead.
Hainan’s site does list a through check-in program with a document of eligible routes. The coverage gaps are exactly where a short connection turns into a missed one. Travelers mixing domestic and international Hainan segments should confirm through checking before counting on it.
The bottom line
The Hainan Airlines baggage allowance splits at the US border into two different systems. One is piece counts with a weight ceiling per bag on flights leaving the United States. The other is a total weight budget on flights inside China.
