Vueling gives every fare a free bag under the seat capped at 40x30x20 cm, or 15.7×11.8×7.9 in, with no stated weight limit. The overhead locker bag is a separate matter. It tops out at 55x40x20 cm, or 21.7×15.7×7.9 in, and 10 kg (22 lb), and it is not automatic on every fare.

Vueling carry-on size rules run backwards from what a lot of US flyers expect. The small bag is always free. The bigger bag is the one you may have to pay for.

Both figures come from Vueling’s own hand luggage allowance page. Wheels and the handle count toward the box, the same as on any measured airline. A bag the maker rates at 21.5 inches can still land over the limit once the wheel housing is measured in.

Vueling carry-on size and the weight question

The bag under the seat has no published weight cap. Gate staff are checking its size against the box, not a scale.

The overhead locker bag does carry a 10 kg limit, and that number sits right on the fare page. A heavy laptop bag booked as the overhead piece is not automatically safe just because it looks small.

An overhead bag that fails the 55x40x20 cm box costs more. It runs EUR 110 to EUR 140 per item at the gate.

A bag that was never booked as a second piece at all is charged that same gate rate. That is the scenario that catches people who assumed a bag would just slide by unchecked.

Which fare actually includes a full carry-on

This is the part travelers get backwards on a Vueling carry-on size search. Fly Light, the cheapest fare, includes only the free bag under the seat. The overhead locker bag is not part of it.

Fly, Fly Grande, Fly Pro and Premium all add the free overhead cabin bag. A Fly Light traveler who wants the bigger bag has to buy the two pieces on board add-on, or book a Space seat, per Vueling’s cabin baggage page.

The personal item question, inverted

On most US carriers the personal item is the free afterthought and the carry-on is the piece you have to fit in the sizer. Vueling flips that.

The 40x30x20 cm bag under the seat is effectively the guaranteed personal item, included on every fare with no upgrade needed. The overhead bag is the piece that behaves like an add-on purchase.

If a bag fails at the gate, whichever box it failed, it gets tagged and sent to the hold for the fee above rather than refused outright. It still makes the flight.

A rigid 22 inch hardside built for the US market commonly runs a few centimeters over Vueling’s 55x40x20 cm overhead box, even before the wheels are counted. Measure before you fly rather than trust the inch number on the box.

What travelers get wrong

The most common mistake is booking Fly Light and assuming the free bag means a full size carry-on. It means the small bag under the seat only.

The overhead locker piece has to be purchased separately, or included by a higher fare. Skipping that step and hoping the gate agent will not notice is the second mistake.

Vueling’s own fee schedule makes that a EUR 60 to EUR 140 bet, and the airline collects it at the gate rather than waiving it.
