Iberia weighs the cabin bag on every fare, and the Economy cap is 10 kg, roughly 22 pounds. That number trips people up more than the box does. Iberia carry-on size is 22 x 16 x 10 inches, 56 x 40 x 25 cm.

That box runs deeper than most US carriers use.

A bag that clears American or Delta can still be too heavy here. The weight cap sits on top of the size cap. Iberia checks both, at different points of the trip.

The box, and the number that actually bites

Iberia’s own hand luggage page lists one cabin bag up to 22 x 16 x 10 inches. The weight cap is 10 kg in Economy and Premium Economy. Short and medium haul Business raises it to 14 kg, about 31 pounds.

Long haul Business allows two bags at 14 kg each. None of those fare tiers change the box size. Only the weight moves.

A personal item travels alongside the cabin bag, up to 16 x 12 x 6 inches, 40 x 30 x 15 cm. Iberia publishes no separate weight limit for it. That is unusual among European carriers, and worth using if the main bag is already close to 10 kg.

Measure with wheels and handle

The 22 x 16 x 10 inch Iberia carry-on size box is measured wheels, handle and any outer pocket included. A case sold as 21 inches is the shell alone.

Wrap a tape measure around the whole bag. Do this before you trust a store label.

How the gate actually plays out

Iberia’s own boarding groups cause more gate checks than a strict sizer does. One long standing traveler account on travel forums describes frequent flyers boarding first with two or three cabin pieces each. The bins fill before the last group, Grupo 3, is even called.

By the time economy passengers in that final group reach the door, the bins are often full. A correctly sized bag can have nowhere to go. It gets checked at the gate instead.

The risk rises on a full flight, and on the smaller regional planes Iberia flies inside Spain.

Board as early as your fare allows. Keep the bag light enough that staff never need to put it on a scale.

Which fares include the cabin bag

This is the part that differs from most US airlines, and it works in the traveler’s favor. Iberia’s own fare comparison page lists one piece of hand baggage on every short and medium haul Economy fare. Basic is included, alongside Optimal, Executive, Comfort, Flexible and Air Shuttle.

The split shows up on checked baggage instead. Basic and Executive require a paid checked bag. Optimal, Comfort, Flexible and Air Shuttle each include one.

That is the opposite of a typical US basic economy fare. There, the cabin bag itself is often the thing you pay for. On Iberia, the checked bag is the upsell, not the carry-on.

Iberia’s fare page did not break out separate hand baggage rules for long haul fare names. Treat the long haul allowance as the 10 kg Economy figure unless a fare confirmation says otherwise.

The personal item and a failed bag

The 16 x 12 x 6 inch personal item goes under the seat. Iberia does not publish a weight cap for it apart from the cabin bag total.

A bag that fails at the gate is checked into the hold. Iberia’s overweight and oversize fees for checked luggage are steeper. That scale is separate from anything charged in the cabin.

Sort a bag that is close to 10 kg before the airport, not at the gate.

Bags that fit the box, and two that do not quite

Because weight is the binding constraint, a case’s empty weight matters as much as its shell size. The Samsonite Freeform 21 inch hardside carry-on is one of Samsonite’s lightest hardsides, 6.5 pounds empty by the maker’s own listing.

That leaves more of the 10 kg total for what you pack. Its overall size with wheels and handle, per Samsonite, is 23 x 15 x 10 inches. That is an inch taller than the Iberia carry-on size limit, so measure your own unit rather than trust the 21 inch name.

The Travelpro Maxlite 5 21 inch softside spinner is lighter still, 5.4 pounds empty per Travelpro. Its overall dimensions are 23 x 14.5 x 9 inches with wheels and handle, also an inch over Iberia’s height cap.

The expansion zip adds depth on top of that. Keep it unexpanded, and expect a soft shell to compress a bit if a gate agent checks it by eye.

The pattern across both hardside cases is the same. A shell marketed at 21 inches routinely measures 23 inches once its wheels and telescoping handle are on.

That clears the US domestic 22 x 14 x 9 box most American carriers use. It runs tight against Iberia’s own 22 inch height cap.

A softside bag like the Osprey gives a little more room to squeeze under a strict eyeball check at the gate.

How Iberia compares

The 10 kg Economy cap sits close to sister carrier Air Europa and to Vueling. Both also weigh the cabin bag rather than relying on size alone.

British Airways and TAP Air Portugal are the more common comparison for US travelers connecting through Madrid. Check both before a mixed itinerary. A bag cleared on one leg of a codeshare can still get weighed on the other.

The bottom line

Iberia’s box is generous by US standards, but the 10 kg Economy weight cap is the real Iberia carry-on size limit. Every fare, Basic included, comes with the cabin bag itself. Pick a light case, weigh it before you leave the house, and board as early as your fare allows so a compliant bag never has to fight for the last inch of overhead bin space.
